Perspective – God Is In Control

On some level, today is a sad day, yet you could also say an exciting day. Today is the first day of 2024 presidential election caucuses or primaries. It is sad because it means that the news will be inundated with election stuff; it is exciting because I am already ready to be done with it. The sooner it starts, the sooner it will be over, I guess. Plus, today is the 100th day of fighting in the Gaza strip with Israel and Hamas. For the few words that I have on this Monday, I want to provide you some perspective – God is in control.

Perspective

As Old MacDonald once said, “With a commentator here, and a commentator there, here a commentator, there a commentator, everywhere a commentator.” Or, he said something close to that. The reality, though, stares us in the face of wall-to-wall political coverage. Not that I try to even follow politics; however, from today forward, it is hard not to be impacted by all the opinions out there.

Two political parties seem to promise more of the same. The more we see the problems here and around the world, the more weary and anxious we may become. Every presidential election year we are told that this is the most important election of our lifetime. As you and I look around us, maybe this is.

And, as I mentioned above, today marks 100 days of war and fighting in the Gaza strip. Craig Dunning of Discipleship Travel reports that most of the trips to the Holy Land for this year are canceled because of the unrest and uncertainty. Having had three of those trips canceled myself, I understand the heartbreak of it – not to speak of the real tragedy that is taking place in Gaza.

In this setting, it is easy to lose perspective.

God is in control.

Here is what we must remember! God is in control. God rules the universe. Romans 8 is so helpful here (Romans 8:18-39). In this text, we learn that God truly is in control. Although today marks the day where individuals will caucus together and cast votes, nothing will happen outside of God’s sovereignty. He providentially will work through this situationally. While He works, the Holy Spirit prays for us according to God’s will. In addition, nothing another voter or candidate can do will separate us from the love of Christ. You can rest assured, according to the Scriptures, God is in control and has this.

Every Person’s Challenge

On this first day of caucus/primaries for the 2024 presidential election, let’s go on record claiming God’s perspective. We commit to…

  • Recognizing God is in control of all things for our good and His glory.
  • He will use this season/year to help us become more like Christ as we are submissive to Him.
  • The Holy Spirit prays for us according to God’s will. He helps us “handle” it.
  • The love of God is not connected to our choice for president; God loves us irrespective of the outcome.
